I don’t like solar screens, but since when does my opinion count anyway. But they do create shade on a window and they cost less than replacement windows, and maybe you like the surreal, artificial, sterile look they give a home.
Solar screens offer a relativley inexpensive means to reducing glare, pretty much eliminating the ultraviolets that will fade your furnature and will help reduce your heat gain. They are mounted on the exterior of the window, like a storm window, and good companies can match your grid pattern in the screen material to match your covered window. You will see that in the pictures below.
They come in a variety of colors, and they are stuck onto the outside of the house. I don’t know if they collect dust and dirt behind their fine screen surface, but they come in a variety of colors. I swiped some pictures below that show a near black appearance and then a near white appearance. They don’t even look like windows anymore to me.
Now we might find someone to defend these and, we do allow people their personal taste, but for now we just leave you with the pictures, and leave you with the answer, solar screens are a window treatment and can help shade a window that is producing too much heat for your comfort. They will cut down on glare and stop most of the UV rays, but… they are homely.
